To cite an example, at the Marrakech Euro-Mediterranean Transport Conference in December 2005, as a response to the Spanish government’s insistency, Commissioner Barrot stated that he considered the development of the corridor as fundamental for linking North Africa and Central Europe, affirming he would ensure it received the maximum attention. The development of this axis is a priority for the Spanish Government and has been presented as such on numerous occasions to the Commissioner for Transport in office. In this respect, it is my wish to speak in particular about rail freight transport. The ‘Mediterranean Corridor’ is a communication axis of major importance, both for connecting southern Europe to the rest of the continent and providing the European Union with access to North Africa. ![]()
